World Championships 2009
Swamp Soccer world Championships go to Finland
After a few years’ break, finnish teams managed to snatch away the championships of both competitive series. The champion of men’s competition series was Telinekataja from Helsinki, and the champion of women’s competition series was SST Coca Cola. In order to find out who the champions are, around 1000 matches were played on 22 playing fields by 325 teams.
Both champions dominated the game clearly and won their matches with scores 1-0. The fatigue caused by the long tournament and the wet swamp was clearly visible during the matches, but the champions were in just a little bit better shape than the opposing teams. The victory of Telinekataja put an end to the russian team Sputnik’s championship streak.
This year’s championships were played over two days instead of previous years’ three. According to Kimmo Kyhälä, manager of Ukkohalla, the players enjoyed the change. “We received a lot of positive feedback of the shortened way of play, so we plan to continue doing things in this manner next year as well. All in all, the championships went smoothly and the event grows more and more interesting internationally every year, so we can start building next years’ championships in truly good spirits”, said Kyhälä while waiting for the award ceremony to begin.
